How Tufnol Rod is made
Tufnol Rod is produced by winding pre-treated sheet very tightly around a small circular mandril. The rod form is made initially much larger than required and then the mandril is removed and it is transfered to a rod mould and compressed under hugh pressure and heat to cure. After the curing process, the rod is removed from the mould and transfered to a centerless machine and ground to the desired diameter. The sheet used and the resin and also the conditions are adjusted along the manufacturing process to produce different grades with different attributes to produce materials for many different applications.
